Master Tips - How to Maintain Coffee Machines
Study it and set up your coffee machine properly
The 1st step to ensuring your machine lasts is to start it correctly. Setting up your coffee machine correctly can help ensure you will not get caught in a tight spot later. While some coffee makers are plug-and-play machines, others might need more fine-tuning.
It also helps to know how to operate your machine correctly. You can do this by reading the manual, or if you prefer a more hands-on approach, by engaging the assistance of the live coffee advisor of your machine’s manufacturer who will guide you through the setup and features of your coffee maker through live video conferencing.
Requesting assistance from your coffee machine manufacturer is usually fairly easy – you can typically just book an appointment, talk about what machine you have, and wait for your session. During your session, the coffee advisor will usually answer all of your questions on setting up several features.
Clean your milk Carafe
While some coffee makers, like the Eversys Cameo model, have an automatic cleaning feature that kicks in after each use, you still need to manually clean your carafe when not in use. It is good to pour only the right amount of milk you need to reduce wastage, then wash your milk carafe after use.
As for the steam wand, you must clean it immediately with a damp washcloth after each operation to prevent the milk from drying up and crusting. This is not just hygienic, but will also prevent the steam wand from clogging up with solidified milk.
Empty your coffee bean container
In a similar vein as emptying and cleaning your carafe, you should do the same for your coffee bean container when not in use. If you use your coffee machine daily, this should not be too much of an issue as you will be emptying and refilling your coffee beans regularly to keep your supply fresh.
But if you know you are going to be away for a while or will not be using your espresso maker for an extended period, be sure to empty the bean storage while your unit is not in use.
Leaving beans in the bean container has 2 significant consequences – it compromises the quality of the coffee beans in the bean container and the decomposition of the beans will leave dark areas and a grimy layer at the bottom of the tank which can be difficult to clean.
Descale your Coffee Machine
Did you know that the type of water you use to make your coffee matters? Ideally, you should be using water that has a pH level of 6.5 – 7.5 to achieve a well-balanced coffee.
Tap water, while convenient, has several minerals like calcium and magnesium that not only affects we extraction and flavour of your coffee but also can accumulate over time and cause a buildup of limescale in your machine which can interfere with your coffee maker’s performance and the overall taste of your brew.
Prevent this from occurring and prolong the lifespan of your machine. Descaling your coffee maker is not as hard as it sounds. Caring for or maintaining your espresso machine is not expensive or difficult but it does need regular and consistent effort.
Make it a point to incorporate these steps in your daily, weekly, or monthly routines and you are good to go on your way to enjoying perfect coffee from your espresso machine for several years to come.
